Pulmonology
A Pulmonology or Respirology specialist is an Internal Medicine, or for children - a Pediatric, medical doctor with additional qualifications enabling specialization in the evaluation and management of diseases of the lungs and airways. Conditions managed by this specialist include lung cancer, community and hospital acquired pneumonia, pleuritic conditions, asthma, occupational and environmental exposures, acute and chronic bronchitis, sleep disorders including sleep apnea, emphysema, and other complex disorders of the lungs. The Pediatric version of the specialist is knowledgeable about the early development of the lung, as well as the appropriate methods to assess respiratory function in infants and children. Pulmonologists are experienced in a variety of diagnostic techniques, both noninvasive and invasive, such as pulmonary function tests and bronchoscopy to diagnose a breathing problem.
