Ophthalmology
Ophthalmology is a specific surgical specialty (children - a Pediatric Ophthalmologist) with the medical doctor acquiring additional qualifications enabling focus on the comprehensive medical and surgical care of the eyes and its component structures. Ophthalmologists manage the diagnosis and treatment of eye conditions and injuries; they can prescribe glasses and contact lenses, dispense medications, and perform surgeries. Common surgical conditions include cataract extraction, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy and LASIK surgery. Additional specialization is available for conditions involving the retina (retina specialist).
