Nuclear Medicine
A Nuclear Medicine specialist uses radioactive chemical agents and imaging to diagnose and treat specific diseases. These images provide information about organ and cellular function on a molecular level also known as molecular imaging. Molecular imaging can be combined with anatomical imaging utilizing mores sophisticated cameras thus substantially improving diagnostic capabilities. Common diagnostic applications include the early detection of coronary artery disease, tumor diagnosis and staging and the evaluation of the effect of cancer treatment and thyroid disorders. Tests include lung perfusion scans, HIDA scans for gallbladder function, thyroid scans and bone scans.
