Colorectal Surgery
Colorectal surgery is a specific surgical specialty with the medical doctor acquiring additional qualifications enabling specialization in the operative and perioperative care of various diseases of the distal or remote intestinal tract including the colon, rectum, anal and perianal areas. Beyond surgery these doctors also perform endoscopic diagnostic procedures such as colonoscopy and sigmoidoscopy. Examples of conditions include hemorrhoids (swollen perianal veins), fissures (painful perianal tears), infections located around the anus and rectum, and problems of the intestine and colon such as colon cancer, intestinal polyps (pre-cancerous growths), and inflammatory bowel diseases including ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease.
