Oncology – Gynecologic

Gynecologic oncology is a subspecialty under the domain of Obstetrics and Gynecology that deals with the management of cancers of the female reproductive organs. Gynecologic oncologists are trained in the surgical management of gynecologic tumors (as in surgical debulking) and in the medical management of cancers (use of chemotherapy and other adjunctive treatment modalities). Gynecologic oncologists work closely with other specialists like Surgical Oncologists and Urologists because tumors of the female reproductive organs often encroach on other pelvic organs like the colon or the bladder. Gynecologic oncologists also work together with Radiation Oncologists for the radiation therapy of some gynecologic tumors. Some of the common cancers treated by radiation oncologists are cervical cancer, ovarian cancer, uterine cancer, and vaginal cancer.
